The Chilling Effects Clearinghouse

Prickle-Prickle, 52nd The Aftermath, 3170.

Iceberg pointed me to an interessting notice at the bottom of a Google search result for surfer serial:

In response to a complaint we received under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint for these removed results.

I’ve never seen such a message before on Google, or never recognized it, but it doesn’t surprising too much. The Chilling Effects homepage has an interesting feed containing the lastest annotated cease and desist letters from their database. So what is the Chilling Effects Clearinghouse?

A quote from their FAQ: “The project invites recipients and senders of cease and desist notices to send them to a central point (here, at for analysis, and to browse the website for background information and explanation of the laws they are charged with violating or enforcing. Clinical law students will prepare issue-spotting analyses of the letters in the question-and-answer style of FAQs, which we will post alongside the letters in an online database. The site aims to educate C&D recipients about their legal rights. Site visitors may search the database by subject area or keyword.”

And another from their homepage: “Conceived and developed at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society, Chilling Effects is a joint project of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and clinics at Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center, Stanford Law School’s Center for Internet & Society, Boalt Hall’s Samuelson Law, Technology and Public Policy Clinic, and other law schools across the country.”

Took a moment for me to understand was that site is all about …
